Look for these basic table saw product features when considering different models and brands:

Every table saw should have a smooth, heavy, flat work surface or table. A flat surface is imperative for ensuring a smooth, consistent, even cut. Quality table saws will be precision ground to flatness within a .0005 inch tolerance plus or minus.

Accessible handles for raising and lowering the saw and adjusting the angle of the blade.

A motor with adequate horsepower. The thickness of the wood that you usually cut will help determine the horsepower needed. If you plan to cut hardwoods three or more inches thick, then a 3 to 5 horsepower motor is recommended. If you plan to cut hardwoods two inches thick or less, then a 1.5 to 2 horsepower motor is recommended.

A blade guard to protect the user from the sharp saw blade.

A fence system designed to guide and position wood or sheet metal as it is cut on the table. A high quality fence should run true and parallel to the saw blade.

A miter gauge for making angled crosscuts. The miter gauge should move smoothly and be clearly marked so that the proper cutting angle can be achieved.
